"History of the Book" by Mattie Cecil
How does the form of literature change how the reader or viewer percieves it?
How does the form of literature change how the reader or viewer percieves it? I feel that this is an important question to be answered, or at least discussed. And I hope that overall my project will demonstrate how the format of literature affects the reader. I researched each stage of development in literature from single, handwritten scrolls and books to mass produced texts and how the development of mass production changed how society viewed literature. Overall, I found that the importance surrounding older methods of producing literature is that it was much more time consuming, personal, and often crafted with finer materials, and therefore made any text an important object. The development of the mass production of literature made anybody able to obtain the text they wanted, making it a common luxury. This comparison of new and old texts might be effective in making readers realize that although most text is easily attained, it is something that should not be taken for granted. A lot of our society has grown to see literature as not a pleasure, but a chore required by schools. Hopefully my chapter will show viewers the drastic changes literature has gone through in order to reach the masses, and will encourage the viewer to regard literature as an important thing no matter in what form.
