At worst, in your “community development” spirit you might create just enough problems to get someone shot after your vacation ends and you rush back to your middleclass neighborhoods where your friends make jokes about “spics” and “wetbacks.”
This quote is found in Illich on the third page of the document page 318 at the top. The way that it is functioning here is that it speaks to a group of people going down to do “community development” or service to the community to build or perform maintenance to the village or thing. This ties in with our definition of “to perform routine maintenance or repair, work on, particularly a motor vehicle or thing”
Service Learning
The community service that i will be talking about is my trip to Tijuana to build a house for a family. It was two summers ago through young life. There was a group of about 30 kids and 30 adults that went down many of whom were close friends of mine. The “house” as they called it, was more of a shack which we built in a little under 5 days. All the supplies were given to us and ready for assembly. We poured a foundation built studs and then stuccoed the walls. This experience was incredibly positive for me. Not only did i learn immensely about the poverty that exists so close to me, i also was able to help out a family in need by providing them with a new place to live. In addition to this it was a very fun trip. As with most service learning positions, I had no idea what to expect going into the situation. But with a positive attitude and the knowledge that you are going to be helping someone who is in need, i feel that the situation will often turn out to be positive and productive.
sonic version of life
Based on the list that im given, the form is somewhat chronological, both in terms of the quarter and their daily life. ive drawn this conclusion because it starts in the morning and ends with a christmas song. Other rap songs, girls chatting at lunch and dinner in the cafeteria, footsteps of her running at the ima, or music being played at frat parties may be some other sounds encountered by this person. Based on the playlist some conclusions that i have drawn is that she is a freshman in a sorority on 17th. She’s on her phone a lot as most of us are and she likes most rap. also she likes to exercise.
