Response to Response Paper 1.1

The eleven sounds of “The Sonic Version of Influential Events in My Life” seem to portray a person who is athletic, and has gone through tough trials in her life. First, the rationale of the order of the sounds seem to exhibit that she started out more melancholy and had a more somber mood. This is shown by the fact that it starts out with “crying” as the first sound, then continues to “Live Like You Were Dying,” and sports coaches yelling. However, by the end of the playlist, it has songs such as “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” by Cyndi Lauper. It shows that the author’s mood has lightened up and I feel that there is more control in their life.

Other sounds which could fit into the playlist would be things which are downbeat in the beginning of the playlist and more happy in the end. For example, in the end of the playlist, cheering or sounds of congratulations could be put on the list. Perhaps Arethra Franklin’s “I Will Survive” could go on here.

This person has a music taste for country, rock, and some classics. She most likely is a girl due to the fact that it has “Cheer Coach yelling” as well as “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

Playlist

This person’s theme is “the sounds of interaction and reaction.” I can see that most of the songs are indeed about relationships with others (friendship, love, judging others), and many of the sounds are the noises of interaction (a camera click could indicate taking a picture of a friend, a blowing nose could be someone crying on another’s shoulder, a whistle could represent playing sports on a team). I have trouble understanding the order of the tracks, though. I might have expected the beating heart and “December, 1963” to be together, since both are about love. Similarly, the blowing nose and “With a little help from my friends” could both be interpreted as one friend supporting another. On the other hand, perhaps s/he intentionally mixed up related sounds/sounds.

This person seems to be a very social person – a hermit probably wouldn’t choose the theme of interaction and reaction, and if s/he did, would choose negative songs. I like the person’s open-minded and positive outlook. S/he chose “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,” indicating a desire to get along well with others and an open, welcoming personality. Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” has a message of respecting all others. I expect the person also has a boyfriend or girlfriend, given the song about love and heart beating…

The Life and Inspirations Of:

The rationale for the song order of her playlist seems to be the things she does throughout one day in her life. She gets up, assuming she is in a dorm she talks to friends in the hall and does everyday things, goes to the IMA, reads, watches the office, etc.  There is a set up of blue underlined songs and also plain black songs and the meaning of this difference is unclear. At first I believed it was the difference between sounds and songs but that clearly was not the case when some of the songs and some of the sounds were blue and others were black.

Other sounds that might fit into the playlist would be more day to day activities or possibly things she does on the weekends, activities or hobbies that are special or fun that she likes to do but does not necessarily does on a daily basis. The playlist of sounds seems to have the typical day but there are also more atypical things that happen in everyone’s lives.

I assume she is a typical college student by her everyday activities. She is religious by some of her song choices and likes music that is not necessarily the most popular and on the radio or MTV but possibly more local bands?

Not so Distinctive Sounds of a University Student

At a first glance I don’t understand the rationale or order of this playlist…It seems to be full of songs in no particular order, and not too many specific sounds that could hint at them being a University of Washington student. So rather than sitting here trying to think of reasons why they did this the way they did (which could take all day, and probably still turn out incorrect) I chose to use google as a tool to uncover the meaning behind these songs.

Number 1 on the list is “I wish I was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)” by Sandi Thom. I have never heard of this song, nor listened to it. When googling the lyrics though, I found some very powerful meaning behind it! These are some lyrics i particularly liked…

“When accountants didn’t have control
And the media couldn’t buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn’t know everything”

This causes me to infer that this person is very opinionated about the crazy things going on in the media today. He/She would most likely dissaprove of Britney Spears’ crazy antics, or by the fact that we are so caught up in the daily activities of Paris Hilton. Technology has deffinitely taken over our world as well, I can’t say this person dissaproves, but maybe they are more artistic and into creativity rather than technical aspects of our world.

“Awkward Elevator Silence” causes me to believe this person may be quite shy or unfriendly? Striking up a convo with a random stranger would be outgoing…the exact opposite.

“Roomates cell phone alarm” shows me that they could possibly be living in a dorm somewhere on campus?

All of these songs on the playlist, I am noticing, are older or classic songs…I don’t quite know what this means other than this person has a different taste in music than I do.

“Barak Obama Iowa Caucus Victory Speech” could mean that this person is a supporter of Obama and very liberal. The last song “Things Will Change” by Modwheelmood, could also infer this same idea.

How you doin?

First off, I assume he/she is Indian, from the prevalence of Indian music in their list. I assume she is a girl, from songs like “Stop” (spice girls), and “Hips don’t lie” (shakira). I assume she’s been around the world a bit, from the inclusion of New York, India, Switzerland, and Florida. I assume that she is somewhat… wholesome? not the right word, but the right idea.

Other sounds that might fit– other indian sounds/songs, something like “live like you were dying”

order: life timeline, maybe?

………….

After reviewing this person’s play list, I believe this person is a female because of the song choices (such as Kelly Clarkson and Lilly Allen).  She also included a Christmas song by Wham, and I believe this means she really likes Christmas if she listens to Christmas music out of season.  She also probably likes cats because she talks to her cat.

The order of rationale seems to be time. The sounds of the playlist take me through this person’s daily life, from waking up in the morning to finishing up at the end of the day. Other sounds that might fit into this playlist are forks and plates clattering while eating, television or some sort of entertainment, and the sipping of coffee or some other beverage. These sounds fit into the authors playlist of a his/her daily life. Based on this playlist, I assume that the person is female because of the choice of music…

The Story of my Life by?

After reading this audiography, I cannot fully understand how they ordered their playlist, rather I can conclude these sounds occur over their lifetime thus far. Maybe at first this person wasn’t living where they are now and during their lifetime they travelled to where they are now. I can’t get the rationale but I do like how the audiography starts and ends in the same sound, “waves washing up onto rocks.”
This person seems to have a lot of sounds from all over the spectrum. They go from traditional chinese music to Linkin Park. They talk about a car’s engine and billard balls hitting eachother. I really can’t think of any other sounds to throw into the mix because this person seems to have such a broad spectrum of sounds.
I will assume that this person maybe of chinese disent. They are into outdoors activites. Music is a reoccuring theme in this persons life. Something about the waves has to do with them, maybe where they live, but it seems a reoccuring theme for their life…

A Close Read of “What I Value Most”

Upon analyzing the playlist, “What I Value Most”, I realize that the playlist is organized in order of most valued to least valued, from top to bottom. For example, the first sound byte is of “family members calling”, and the second sound byte is of “talking with friends”. Here, you can see that the people closest to the author are valued most. Beyond the second sound byte are hobbies and favorite entities of popular culture. Another sound clip that could possibly “fit” in this person’s playlist would be the sound of a whistle, because he or she seems to enjoy sports. Furthermore, I would assume that this person plays sports in his or her freetime, and watches sports on television. Another thing I would assume about is that the author is a male because Lil’ Wayne is a popular rapper among young men. In addition, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 are coveted video games by most of the young male population.

Analysis

The playlist seems to follow this person’s life from when he was a little kid to where he is now.

Other songs that might fit on his playlist are more hip hop/rap/r and b songs such as I’m So Hood by DJ Khaled, Kiss Kiss by Chris Brown, Hip Hop Police by Chamillionare, Get Buck in Here by Akon, Hit the dance floor by DJ Unk, and Superman by Soulja Boy.

From the playlist I can assume that he lived in Scotland, that he is asian, he played mario, he watched pinky and the brain and animaniacs as a little kid, he moved, he started liking gangsta music, he might have been part of a sports team at newport, he came to the University of Washington, and joined the frat Sigma Nu.
