Re-Cap of Today’s Class, Course Reserves, and Prepping for Tuesday

Great class today, everyone. I especially enjoyed our conversations about masking and look forward to chatting a bit more about your new voice-over narrators for Dark Days on Tuesday.
Per your request, I’ve placed the following on 24-hour reserve at Odegaard Library:
- The Voice in Cinema by Michel Chion
- Invisible Storytellers by Sarah Kozloff
- Grizzly Man (I added this one to the list, because it’s rich with voice-over material)
- Dark Days
- The Shining
Also, if you are looking for Murray Schafer’s terms (keynote, signal, soundmark, etc.), then they are included in the “Audio-Visual Scene and Masking” post. These terms might be useful for your upcoming sequence one writing.
For Tuesday’s class, please:
- Read Ivan Illich’s “To Hell with Good Intentions” (please print for class discussion or bring your laptop)
- Read Nadinne Cruz’s “A Challenge to the Notion of Service” (please print for class discussion or bring your laptop)
- Review and respond to the prompt for Podcast 1.
- Record your podcast (recording options are on the course site under “course materials”). (If you are having recording issues, then just let me know! Don’t stress it!)
- Upload your mp3 (titled in the form, “[firstname][podcast#].mp3,” like “jentery1.mp3”) to the course drop box (preferred) or e-mail it to english3000@gmail.com.
- (Recommended) Watch the film you are selecting for your upcoming sequence one writing.
On Tuesday, we will:
- First discuss your new voice-over narrators for Dark Days,
- Then we will converse about Cruz and Illich as a class,
- Conduct our second keyword collaboratory, and
- Finally, we will review balance of the sequence one writing prompts (1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and Major Paper 1).
Have a great weekend, people! And be in touch with questions!
Best,
Jentery
